EP 61 : Tarot Talk on the Star Card

The Star card is the 17th Card of the High Arcana, I have always liked it. The image of a woman pouring water into a pool under the night sky with stars all around.

Now it follows the destruction of the tower card, So to me has always been a card of hope.  The Calm after a storm

Let’s start with the symbology

We have the figure of a woman on the edge of a body of water, I think of it as a pond…

In the night sky there are stars above her

She is pouring water one vessel empties into the pool one onto the land

The symbology of the night sky and the water points to themes of an emotional nature

Water

  • represents our subconscious and our emotions
  • On some cards show her wading into the water
  • in others she is on the edge
  • or with one foot in the water

We are being shown the idea of going into our emotions to examine them, we are wading into them and staying grounded

(like literally staying on the earth )

The pouring of water onto the land and into the water symbolizes the flow of emotions. Letting go and releasing but also transmuting.

Nudity

The star card is always naked, this is to symbolize her venerability.

she is safe in her vulnerability, she is in nature with only trees, or a gentle animals around her. To me she always looks natural.

Stars

  • the light in the darkness
  • The comfort that starlight gives us as a representation of the divine
  • the large star is thought to represent the Morning Star what we know now is Venus as it is seen at dawn and dusk
  • The Goddess overlooking our deep emotional work

In my studies, I have always found the descriptions of the star card to be lacking

In my experience the Star card represents hope.

It captures the essence of looking up in the dark sky and seeing all the stars above shimmering and winking down on us. That feeling we get of vastness and how very small we are

The way that star gazing can connect us to our spirituality and put our fears and worries into perspective. Connecting us to the bigger picture of our lives.

When I teach tarot I use the concept of the fool’s journey through the cards. I find it is really helpful when we are in this section of the tarot looking at the more abstract cards

Because the star follows the tower card, it speaks of hope in a time of crisis and destruction. The faith that we find as we sift through the waters we find under our crumbled tower

What did we uncover about ourselves, what emotions and ideas need to be transmuted and what can we pour back into the water?

This reflective work we are doing can fill us with fear if it were not for the comfort of the stars

So, it is a card of hope, of the pause of reflection and sifting before we rebuild what has crumbled.

How do we read this for our clients?

In a spread, the Star card is going to be a beacon of hope. I feel it is always a good omen type card no matter what situation is happening for your client. Hope in a dark time is powerful

  • If your client has been in a phase of transition … hard lessons and letting go type

the star card is a sign that the worst is over and we are in the pause space before they are strong enough to rebuild

the battle has been fought, and the earthquake has settled

  • It may not yet feel like it to them and that could be because they are looking at the rubble and deeply into their emotions and not at the stars
  • They have stepped too far into the emotional pool and need to get back on the land a bit
  • So, the star card can sometimes tell you to reconnect with your faith. Whether that is your goddesses or your faith in yourself
  • Remember that feeling that people get of being small when we look up at the heavens and see the Milky Way spread out across the inky sky
  • That is what you need to connect with in your heart

The image in the card is an echo of the temperance card

A woman in a pool sifting water

The star card is like looking in a dark scrying mirror and seeing the reflection of the temperance card.

There is quiet strength in the venerability this card shows

Like the temperance card, the star card is about slowing down to examine our feelings and to allow for integration

Mythic Tarot deck

Can we connect with our deepest understanding so that we can understand our path? not just from our perspective but from the vantage point of the stars looking down on us?

The star card reminds us that we are part of the divine,

and that we have already overcome our obstacles

Sure there is the work of wading into our emotions and understanding our depth. This work is hopeful and beautiful in its vulnerability.

We have the company of the stars to guide us, the soft magical sparks of hope in the vast inky sky.
