Magical ethics what does that mean …
I’m going to unpack this one today, the idea of doing helpful spell work for another person. What is involved when we do spell work for another person?
Yep… I’m looking at the ethics involved in helpful spells not Disruptive ones.
You can defiantly do spell work for another person. I do witch work for hire. and cast spells and weave blessings for my clients.
Ethics come into that work, and there is a way to be professional about the offerings that you can provide as a witch. The equitable exchange between practitioner and client…. I was taught is tied into Karma. Even when I am hired to do work, I am still karmatically responsible for the work I do – but so is the client who asks for it.
Kind of like if you work for a company that is breaking the law both you and the company are responsible for the harm you are putting into the world. But spells that disrupt another person is not the piece of ethical magic I want to unpack today
What about doing helpful magic for someone you know…. ?
Like when we send healing of positive vibes or love and light to our friends when they are struggling or in need of some love.
If you have been in the earbud coven with me a while you might know that I differentiate between sending intentions and positive energy someone’s way and doing spell work. Its on a spectrum or a gradient is how I like to think of it.
So lets look at the ethics of spell work for someone you know. Because I feel if you send positive good love vibes to even a stranger is ethically ok.
Spell work is an action you are taking with intention and focus. it involves ethics (unless you don’t care about you karma and are ok spreading hate and chaos through magical channels)
There are a few things you can ask yourself as a ethical check in
Do they know you are doing this
Like did they ask you to help them?
If not then no matter how well intentioned you are this is not an ethical action.
You are interfering with someone’s life and timeline with out consent. It’s my feeling that no matter how well intentioned the work is… with out consent it is unethical.
But you say they are in need of healing or help or assistance
My answer to you is then ask them if they want it help.
If they say yes, then you can have an open discussion with your friend about what they would like the help you are offering to look like.
Maybe what you intend or believe is great for your friend is not what they want. Maybe the block they have or the core wound that is coming up for them is not what you thought it was before talking with them and getting consent and insight
But my friend doesn’t know I am a witch and is a non-believer / atheist. I can’t talk to them about this.
It is still not ethical to cast spells for them.
A spell you do with the best intentions with out permission can and likely will backfire. You can not force change on someone.
Can you force a horse to drink water when you bring them to a stream?
And I hear you ethics are not black and white there is a lots of room for conversation and maybe there is never a perfect answer. That’s the whole point of today’s episode.
Its why I started the conversation differentiate between wishing kindness and goodness generally and intentional spell work.
We can radiate love and light to the world ethically … in choosing to put goodness into the world we are not trying to change another persons path or effect their life. Radiating positivity allows people free will. Its like energetically smiling at someone.
Spell work is about harnessing energy for a specific outcome.
It has intent…
So the Ethics matter
What about doing healing work on your family line, as a healer and chain-braker of your generation can you do healing work for your family members?
There is a lot to unpack when we look at our family systems and generational patterns…
I feel that it is still un-ethical to do spell work to try and “make” another person heal. In conversations with friends about our families the dynamics within them, I have come to the conclusion that a way we can help with out imposing our will on another is to send healing energy to our family members. Because we do often feel a deep responsibility to help those we love when we see them suffering. By sending healing we are giving a sort of energetic battery for them to draw on as they work on themselves.
The biggest way we can help with healing ancestral patterns is to do our own work.
We tend to downplay the power of healing our own patters…. as we break free of generational patters we loosen the chains around everyone involved.
Many of us know and accept that our healing work helps the generation after ours, that it ripples forward. What we tend to ignore is that the ripples happen in a circle, just like when we toss a pebble in a pond. They ripple through our own generation, effecting our siblings and cousins. They ripple backwards touching our parents, grandparents and ancestors.
It’s why I like the imagery of “chain-braking” every link we cut gives everyone in the situation more wiggle room, so that they can get themselves free too.
We each have the power to change, to heal, to create a life of abundance and love.
That is one of the things about this crooked path we walk, when we embrace the truth that we are powerful forces of nature. That we have the power to create the lives we want to be living . Then we need to consider how our actions affect others, we are the ones responsible for what we put into the world.
You know my thoughts on ethics, I’m interested in hearing yours. Lets continue this conversation in the comments.
