EP 49 : Throwing the Bones with Calie

I am thrilled to introduce everyone in the earbud coven to Calie, she in an Osteomancer. She practices the art of bone throwing.

As readers tend to do when we get together our conversation naturally starts by talking about tarot decks, tea leaves and giving messages. Before we get to the business of learning about what brought Calie to this unique form of divination.

Calie had spiritual awakening around ten years ago, though she’s been experimenting and learning about tarot for a few years before that. Her true specialty lies in bone readings – also known as osteomancy. Her talents include energetic body scans and energy healing.

Together with her mother – who is also very spiritually inclined – she run a small business known as Beautiful Serenity Tarot Reading.

Is an very old method of divination. The term is applied to divination methods where a collection of items are allowed to fall on a reading surface or mat.

Many different cultures have their own rendition of it this art, using different materials. Not always bones. Calie mentions a tradition in the UK that uses sheep scapula and an African one that uses cowrie shells.

Calie uses has refined a technique using a kit that combines traditionally used objects, such as bones, shells and plant patter, with some contemporary items like metal charms. There are some smallish found objects in her kit that have called to her to be picked up and included, sharing their meaning with her. She finds items on her walks, that call to her or to be in her kit. Similar to how we feel drawn to certain crystal or decks.

Her kit fascinates me.

The meanings of the items that she shows me, both as part of my reading and in conversation. Even though each piece is unique, the symbology and what they speak to in a reading resonates with me.

As we look at the items we talk about how animals graciously serve us as messengers. Calie feels that that animals, even in their death, are will happily help us. That they want to be of use and help us even in death.

We are all familiar with how a card reader shuffles, throwing the bones has its own technique. Calie tunes into her clients energy and then she blows a stream of air across her kit before she stirs them and allows the items to find their way into her hands. She then tosses or “throws” them across her reading mat.

The casting is read by looking at the items and what they are saying as well as where they are laying on the reading cloth.
