Today is a Tarot Talk episode !
I do love doing these episodes!
The Temperance card is the 14 card of the high arcana. It is the last card in the second set of 7.
(In case you are new to the earbud coven… we can look at the high arcana in 3 sets of 7 cards, the 2nd set is all about deep lessons and looking inward for self-discovery)
After this episode, we will be taking a small break for tarot episodes. So that I can bring you a few more interviews to you over the summer. I’ll be at pagan pride again this summer so I hope to see you there, please come by and say hello.

The Temperance card was a tricky one for me when I was new to tarot. I struggled to feel into it.
Many books list this card to mean healing or balance. To me, that felt like repeating the definitions of cards like the chariot or justice. I knew there was more to this card but I couldn’t quite put my finger on it.
Over the years sitting with my clients the deeper meaning of this card unfolded for me.
There is more to it than that, it is about allowing the lessons we have learned to integrate into our energy field. To allow for the subtle shifting within after we overcome an obstacle.
It’s an invitation to slow down to stay with the feelings, the moment and examine them…. so that you can absorb the healing. It’s about being a witness to your healing.
Let’s talk about the root word of temperance in order to better understand this card.
To temper steel we put it in a forgers fire.... heating it.
Then we allow it to cool .... and reintroduce the steal
to the fire again, and again
We need to do this mindfully and with care.
The process when done well hardens can harden the blade of a sword,
without compromising the sharpness of the blade
Too much heat and we risk the blade becoming misshapen.
The symbology of the temperance card doesn’t show a forge and a blade. We have instead an angelic form sifting water.
so let’s think about that process of purification.
Scooping water from the river at her feet and allowing the silt to settle before decanting it into the other vase.
She repeats the process until the water is clear.
Much of the time we spend allowing the water and silt to settle can seem idle, its as if we are doing nothing. When it truth it is time spent examining, and allowing the process to happen organically.
The time it takes for things to settle cannot be rushed
That is the meaning behind the Temperance card.
