Every ritual, spell or working starts with creating sacred space. In today’s episode, we look at the art of casting a magical circle. I share with you information about energetic boundaries, why it’s important to use a circle in the first place and how it can affect your workings. And of course, I go down a few rabbit holes along the way. There are no real references or links for this episode as all the information was pulled from my experience.
Those of you in the earbud coven know, that I have been on this path for more than 20 years, so the way I cast a circle has changed over time. When I was newer to the path, I used to physically draw out a circle on the floor before I started to cast. This gave me something real to focus on when I was creating the energetic boundary. I have used both salt and chalk to do this, then I could vacuum it all up when I was done. I’ve never had a home where I could have a room reserved for ritual, so I found ways to work around not having a permanent space reserved for magic, even today I typically just cast in my kitchen. No matter where you do it, creating sacred space to work in is a fundamental skill every witch should have. At its foundation, it is a way of creating a container to work within. Like trapping lighting inside a jar.
One of the things I address in this episode is that there is a difference between traditional spell work and manifesting. Spell work is very intentional and focuses on creating what you want or changing an area of your life. Where manifestation work is more about aligning your energies and working with the laws of attraction. Comparing the two leads us down a rabbit hole where we look at some of the connotations around the words ‘magical manipulation.’ I unpack some cultural fear around feminine power and women using their power to create favourable circumstances in their lives.
We talk about how creating sacred space and working within a circle offers protection. It acts as an energetic boundary. A magical circle is a place between the physical world and the astral planes, it’s an in-between place… We use the energetic boundaries of our circle as a container for our spell work. The energy we raise and the work we do is build inside this clean container. The circle protects us and ensures the energy we raise is used for the purpose we intend. I share a story with you where I was at an event and sacred space was not cast before the start of our gathering.
