Do you identify with the high priestess? I know that I sure do. She represents the divine feminine, our intuition and knowledge. She has the ability to see beyond the vail and into the hidden realms. As the second card in the high arcana the idea of dichotomy is also layered into the card. Its here that we see the old wisdom of “as above so below”
Traditionally she is paired with the Hierophant, the way that the Empress card is paired with the Emperor. Personally, I feel that she pairs better with the Magician card, as the Hierophant seems to be expressed in our modern decks as more an idea of faith and less like a Pupal figure.
(for more about the Hierophant and how he is evolving check out EP 14 on the podcast)
Let’s look at her symbology…
Two Pillars, one light and one dark: Representing the dichotomy between light and dark, death and rebirth, as above so below and many more. It is the representation of the duality that underlies our world and whose balance is at the core of the natural rhythms.
A Vail: it hangs between the pillars and is the vail between worlds. The very one that thins in October allowing us to peer more easily into the spirit world. The High Priestess as a seer and initiate of the occult passes beyond the vail and has access to the wisdom found there.
A Symbol of Esoteric of Knowledge: Often a book, sometimes a scroll or parchment; she holds the secrets of the initiated and wise. I have heard it referred to as the Kabbalistic Book of Knowledge, the Akashic Records, Dead Sea Scrolls, Egyptian Book of the Dead, and many more things.
Water: the element most associated with femininity. The 1st lady we meet in as the fool has water in her card. Linking her to the mysteries of the moon.
If we consider this a bit deeper the represents the idea of scrying and seeing the hidden depths of human emotion and desires
Keys: reinforcing the idea of her ability to access the spirit realm she holds keys. What she is unlocking can be very subjective, is she walking through dimensional doors or unlocking our subconscious?
